UK AND GERMANY LEAD ONLINE PETERSBERG CLIMATE DIALOGUE ON GREEN RECOVERY

On the 27th and 28th of April Germany and the UK hosted the 11th Petersberg Climate Dialogue, bringing together environment ministers from around 30 countries to discuss plans for a green recovery and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. For the first time the event was conducted online.

The meeting focussed on how to organise a green recovery once the acute phase of the coronavirus pandemic is over, and also how to achieve ambitious reductions in carbon emissions despite the postponement of COP26 (currently without a new date).

UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Alok Sharma stated: ‘As President of COP26, I am absolutely committed to increasing global climate ambition so that we deliver on the Paris Agreement. The world must work together, as it has to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, to support a green and resilient recovery, which leaves no one behind’.

 The High-Level-Segment programme included -

  1. Welcome address by Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze

  2. Speech by UN Secretary-General António Guterres

  3. Speech by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel

  4. Questions and answers with the ministers
